Project Description
MYLO is a new way to learn languages and the working title for the Open School for Languages. It is an initiative of DCSF that aim to increase participation in language learning.
MYLO provides learners an exciting and engaging environment within which to learn a language via linking young learner’s favourite interests with things they like doing on the internet – like playing games, creating blogs and movies, and sharing and working with others – making learning languages exciting and fun!.
With an aim to support learners of all abilities and encourage development and progression through interactive tasks and challenges, Department Of Education aim to design an online resource which will set a new benchmark as to what an online learning experience should feel like.
Although predominantly a classroom resource, it is envisaged that certain aspects could be for home use also. Operating in this competitive space where other influences are continually striving for the learners’ attention, MYLO offers an experience which the learner will find rewarding and fulfilling.
Strategy: User Journey, User Personas, Multi-user screen flows
Design: Wireframes, Conceptual Design, Interactive Prototype (Axure)
Working with Learners, Teachers and specialists, we have developed the following design principles. An engaging, valuable, flexible, Complementary, innovative, creative, real-life and evolving experience for young learners.
Further support, including detailed success criteria, transcripts, translations, a glossary, and culture notes on related topics and help notes mapped to the language learning strategies also made available to the learner at the point of need.
Working as interaction designer, my role involves research includes heauristic evaluation of existing design, further requirement gathering via interacting with project stakeholders – Teachers, Students and experts via interviews, surveys, analysing existing user requirement documents and conducting brainstorming section which involves other team members.
In design phase, worked on user journey, paper prototyping, multiple user screen flows (mainly used to interact with developers for project estimation and understanding feasibility) and transform the design to wireframes and interactive prototypes (Axure). All the proposed solutions were supported by visual design to make sure the ideas could be implemented by the design and development team.
Other tasks involved conducting user testing the pilot website among students and identify the usability and accessibility issues and propose necessary changes. Based on these recommendations, implemented changes in the existing design and tested those with users to understand the impact of the changes.
